Sree Narayana Gurudevan

Saint, Social Reformer, and Philosopher

"One Caste, One Religion, One God for Man"

"Whatever be the religion, it suffices if it makes a person better. Gain Freedom through Education, Gain Strength through Organization."

Life & Spiritual Mission of Sree Narayana Guru (1856 – 1928)

Sree Narayana Guru was born on the 20th of August 1856 (under the star Chathayam, Chingam 1032 of the Malayalam calendar) in the village of Chempazhanthi near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, to Madan Asan and Kutti Amma at Vayalvaram Veedu.

Early Education & Gurukulam

Endearingly called "Nanu", he displayed prodigious powers of memory. Under his father and uncle Krishnan Vaidyan, he mastered Sanskrit, Ayurveda, and Tamil literature, later joining the Gurukulam of Raman Pillai Asan at Varanappally to study poetics, logic, and Advaita philosophy.

Maruthwamala Cave Tapas

Embarking as an itinerant sanyasin (Parivrajaka), Guru observed austere meditation in the Pillathadam Cave at the top of Maruthwamala hills. Sustaining himself on forest herbs and brook water, he attained divine enlightenment and experienced the oneness of all creation.

1888: Aruvippuram Pratishta

In an unprecedented act of spiritual revolution, Guru consecrated a Shiva Lingam drawn from the Neyyar River at Aruvippuram on Shivaratri night, breaking centuries of orthodox hegemony and inscribing: "Devoid of dividing walls of caste or race, we all live here as brothers."

Sivagiri & Advaita Ashram

Founded Sivagiri Mutt at Varkala in 1904 and the octagonal Sharada Temple in 1912. In 1913, he founded Advaita Ashram at Aluva, organizing the historic 1924 All-Religions Conference under the motto: "Not to argue and win, but to know and be known."

The Ten Divine Messages of Guru

Spiritual Principles

Universal aphorisms expounded by Gurudevan illuminating non-dualism, mutual respect for world faiths, and the spiritual pathway to self-realization.

01 Hindu religion contains the foundational principles of all religions. For genuine spiritual attainment, its non-dual philosophy is inexhaustible.
02 My philosophy is also aligned with Buddhism, for I am an Advaitin (teacher of non-dualism) who sees no division between sentient beings.
03 During Christ’s era, love was the greatest necessity of mankind. Christ therefore gave prominence to love. One should cultivate boundless patience like Christ.
04 The teachings of Prophet Mohammed are noble. During his life, universal brotherhood was essential; Islam therefore elevates brotherhood above all.
05 The divine is beyond all worldly measures and physical representations; it is the transcendental, pure consciousness behind the universe.
06 Ignorance breeds discrimination, pride, and societal conflict. Such deep prejudices can only be healed by spiritual strength and purity of soul.
07 God is pure consciousness and absolute knowledge (Chit Purusha) who perceives without physical senses and permeates all reality.
08 Our Lord is a divine ocean of supreme enlightenment; everything we see, touch, and experience are but the waves upon that boundless ocean.
09 Those whose thoughts and actions are dedicated to truth and the welfare of humanity will ever be sheltered and guided by God.
10 The ritual of prayer should be performed by every heart and every home. Offer prayers daily with sincerity, dignity, and universal goodwill.

Daiva Dashakam —

Composed 1914 • Ten Verses to God

Composed in 1914 at Advaita Ashram, Aluva. A universal prayer transcending all dogmas and sectarian divisions, recommended by scholars as one of the sublime philosophical prayers of modern humanity.

1
കൈവിടാതിങ്ങു ഞങ്ങളെ;
O God! Protect us without forsaking us here.
You are the Captain of this vast ocean of existence,
And Your sacred word the steamship of our salvation.
2
Counting one by one as the countable forms vanish,
Just as the seeing eye rests steady at the end,
So may our inner spirit remain motionless in You.
3
Providing food, clothing and shelter without fail,
Protecting and fulfilling our lives with dignity—
You alone are our supreme Lord.
4
Like the ocean, the wave, the wind and depth,
So are we, Maya (illusion), Your majesty and You—
May this realization dwell deep within our soul.
5
You alone are the creation, the Creator,
And the myriad created forms;
You alone, O God, are the very substance of creation.
6
You are the illusion, the master of illusions,
And the divine enjoyer of the cosmic play;
You are the noble one who dispels all illusions and grants liberation.
7
You are Truth, Pure Knowledge, and Absolute Bliss (Sat-Chit-Ananda);
You are the present, the past, and the unborn future;
The spoken word itself, when contemplated, is none other than You.
8
Filling the inner world and outer cosmos with glory,
We sing praises to Your divine presence;
Victory unto You, O Blessed Supreme Being!
9
Victory to You, Great Divine Savior of the afflicted!
Victory to the Embodiment of Consciousness and Bliss!
Victory to the limitless Ocean of Compassion!
10
In the deep, boundless ocean of Your divine radiance,
May we all be fully submerged and dwell eternally;
May we abide, abide, in everlasting peace and joy!
